Jan Jenkins is a native of Jasper, Georgia and grew up in Pickens County while also spending much time in Washington D.C. where her father served as a Congressman in the House of Representatives for 16 years representing north Georgia. Jan attended Emory University where, among other activities, she was part of an independent research program in which she actively participated in ongoing medical research and studied abroad, before receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology, with a second major in Psychology. Jan obtained her law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law. During law school, she was a founding member of the Equal Justice Association which raised money to grant scholarships to law students to subsidize their ability to work in public interest jobs with no funds to hire legal assistance. Jan also served as an officer of the Environmental Law Association and was responsible for organizing the “Red Clay Conference” providing a forum for over 250 lawyers, scientists and grass-root environmentalists from around the country to meet, attend lectures and discuss pressing environmental issues and possible solutions. Jan has worked as a specially designated Assistant District Attorney in the Hall County District Attorney’s Office, covering Hall, Lumpkin, White and Dawson counties. She additionally worked for the law firm of Sartain and Sartain in Gainesville, Georgia where she concentrated on civil litigation involving medical malpractice claims, worker’s compensation claims and insurance defense cases. During the 10 years following law school, Jan clerked for then Chief Judge William C. O’Kelley, a federal district court judge, and then became an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia. As an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Jan tried both civil and criminal cases, first concentrating on narcotic and money laundering cases, and later focusing on violent crimes cases, including co-trying the first federal death penalty case in Georgia. In addition, for many years, Jan handled all cases involving child sexual exploitation and was also responsible for handling general crime cases in the Rome Division covering northwest Georgia.
Honors include receiving the Director’s Award for Outstanding Performance by an Assistant U.S. Attorney and commendations for work involving international matters, as well as numerous commendations from federal and local law enforcement agencies.

Jan is an avid scuba diver, an active member of the Diver’s Alert Network, and is available to assist law enforcement in Search, Rescue and Recovery diving accidents. She also participates in church and community activities.
